About 24 crore cattle and buffaloes in the country have been vaccinated against the target population of 25.8 crore cattle (as per the data submitted by the states) during the second round of foot-and-mouth disease vaccination drive, said an official statement.

The government on Friday said about 24 crore buffaloes and cattle have been covered under the Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination drive. FMD is a major disease of cattle especially milch cattle and buffaloes in India and it causes huge economic loss to the cattle rearers due to affected milk production. About 24 crore cattle and buffaloes in the country have been vaccinated against the target population of 25.8 crore cattle (as per the data submitted by the states) during the second round of foot-and-mouth disease vaccination drive, said an official statement.

This achievement has been achieved due to the untiring efforts of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), the administration of the State and Union Territory Governments and the support of the livestock owners, the statement said. The program is 100 per cent funded by the Centre. The program aims to control FMD through vaccination, leading to its eventual elimination by the year 2030. This will result in increase in domestic production and eventually export of livestock products. Presently all cattle and buffaloes are vaccinated under this programme.
