According to the department, tremors were felt in Pakistan in Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Quetta, Peshawar, Lakki Marwat, Gujranwala, Gujarat, Sialkot, Kot Momin, Madh Ranjha, Chakwal, Kohat and Gilgit-Baltistan areas. According to footage broadcast on television, people came out of their homes in fear and took to the streets. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Peshawar tweeted that nine people, including five men, two women and two children, were killed in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.
A man in Islamabad and a 13-year-old girl in Abbottabad died of heart attack after the quake, Dawn newspaper reported. The quake caused a stampede in a Rawalpindi market, while nearly 200 people were injured in Swat, where hospitals declared an emergency, The Express Tribune reported. The tremors were also felt in the mountainous region of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), triggering landslides there. However, there is no immediate report of any loss of life or property.
Rescue officials said the landslide damaged an animal husbandry center in Yasin Ghaizer, killing some animals. The landslide blocked the Karakoram Highway in Kohistan’s Harban area near the border of GB’s Diamer district, leaving several people stranded, sources said. Cracks were visible in several buildings in Rawalpindi, a city neighboring Islamabad. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has asked disaster management officials to be ready to deal with any situation.
An ’emergency’ has been declared in hospitals in the federal capital on the instructions of federal health minister Abdul Qadir Patel, The Express Tribune reported. At least three people have died and 44 others have been injured in earthquake-related incidents, according to Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health. “The number of casualties may increase,” the online Afghan news agency Khama Press reported, citing the Ministry of Public Health.
Sharafat Zaman Amarkhel, a spokesman for Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health, said the heads of all medical centers have been instructed to keep staff ready to treat casualties. According to the International Seismological Center, apart from Pakistan, earthquake tremors were also felt in India, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, China and Kyrgyzstan. Earthquakes are frequent in Pakistan. In January this year, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit Islamabad. In 2005, more than 74,000 people were killed due to the massive earthquake.
