A 71-year-old prisoner lodged in a Russian prison on espionage charges has died. The workers gave this information on Sunday. Russia has dropped its case against the late Viktor Demchenko, according to court documents obtained by human rights group Memorial.

He was accused of spying, being part of a terrorist group, and possessing arms and ammunition. Officials later told Russian state news agency Tass that Demchenko had suffered a stroke several days before his Dec. 31 death, but did not explain why there was such a delay in making the news public.
