NASA astronauts Matthew Dominik, Michael Barrett, Janet Epps and Tracy C. Dyson are set to arrive at the space station this month and in March.

“Human Brain Organoid Models for Neurodegenerative Disease and Drug Discovery” (HBOND) studies the mechanisms behind neuro-inflammation, a common feature of neurodegenerative disorders.

Researchers have created “organoids” using patient-derived iPSCs (induced pluripotent stem cells) from patients with Parkinson’s disease and primary progressive multiple sclerosis.

The results may help improve diagnosis, provide information about the effects of aging, accelerate drug discovery, and identify therapeutic targets for patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases.

According to NASA, “organoid” models could also provide a way to predict how extended space flight affects the brain and support the development of countermeasures.

Plants could serve as a source of food and provide other life-support services on long-term missions to the Moon and Mars.

The study on “Plant response to the stresses of microgravity and high ultraviolet radiation in space” (Plant UV-B) investigates how the stresses of microgravity, UV radiation and the combination of both affect plants at molecular, cellular and whole organism levels. Does.

“The results may increase understanding of plant growth in space and help improve plant cultivation technologies for future missions,” the space agency said.
