Melbourne: Serbia’s fourth seed Novak Djokovic reached the final of the Australian Open tennis tournament with a 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 victory over unseeded American player Tommy Paul. He will now face third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final on Sunday. Djokovic is thus just one match away from winning the 10th championship and 22nd Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park. Nadal also has 22 Grand Slam titles.

27th consecutive win in the tournament

It was Novak Djokovic’s 27th consecutive win at the Australian Open, the longest in the Open era since 1968. Last year, he could not play in the tournament due to the vaccine controversy. He is yet to get vaccinated but this year the restrictions have been eased. He will now face Tsitsipas on Sunday, who came back from two match points in the third set to beat Karen Khachanov in a four-set match to reach her maiden Melbourne Park final.

Tsitsipas eventually won the match 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-3. Whoever wins the final, that player will move to the top of the ATP rankings. Djokovic will return to the top spot, which he has held for more weeks than any other player, but Tsitsipas will make his debut at number one if he wins. Tsitsipas had not progressed past the semi-finals thrice earlier in the Australian Open. He has reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time in his career.

Strong record against Tsitsipas

Djokovic, on the other hand, has never lost a semi-final or final match in Melbourne, with a ‘perfect’ 19-0 record and nine titles, a men’s singles record. If he adds another Australian Open title to his tally of seven Wimbledons, three US Opens and two French Opens, he will equal Rafael Nadal’s record (22) for most Grand Slam trophy wins. Djokovic has a 10-2 head-to-head record against Tsitsipas, winning their last nine meetings.

Tsitsipas had earlier reached a Grand Slam final at the 2021 French Open where he lost to Djokovic in five sets after winning the first two sets. After winning the first two sets against Khachanov, Tsitsipas was serving for the match at 5–4 in the third set. He got two match points in between but he failed to capitalize on both of them. Khachanov then took the set to the tie-breaker and kept his hopes alive by winning it. Tsitsipas, however, regained the momentum early in the fourth set and took a 3-0 lead. After this he did not look back and made this match his name.
