This decision was taken after the unanimous recommendation of the selection committee of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The PCB said in a media release, ‘Following the unanimous recommendation of the PCB Selection Committee, the Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi Has appointed Babar Azam as the captain of Pakistan men’s cricket team in white ball formats (ODI and T20 International).

Babar left the captaincy after poor performance in the World Cup

Babar Azam stepped down from captaincy for Pakistan in all three formats after a disappointing performance in the ODI World Cup in India in November last year. Babar left the role after then PCB chief Zaka Ashraf said that he no longer wanted to be the captain in the limited overs format and only wanted to lead the Test team. A PCB source had said on Saturday that talks are going on with Babar regarding captaincy, but the selection committee is not unanimous on making Babar the captain of all formats. Whereas Babar wanted to become the captain of all three formats.

Babar Azam will replace Shaheen Afridi

Babar will replace fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi as T20 captain, who led Pakistan in the 1-4 series defeat against New Zealand in January. The T20 World Cup will start from June 1 in America and West Indies. On Saturday itself, news had come that Shaheen Afridi himself, angry at not being included in the meetings, wanted to leave the captaincy. At the same time, news also came that the new PCB chairman wants to make Babar the captain again. Babar had set some conditions for captaincy. It seems that the PCB agreed to his conditions and appointed him the captain of the white ball format. The decision on Test captaincy will be taken later.
