If the Diwali Day bill is passed by the Congress, it will become a law after getting the assent from the President and Diwali will become the 12th federal holiday in the US.

Speaking to the media, Member of Parliament Grace Meng said that Diwali is one of the most important days of the year for innumerable families and communities in the United States of America (USA), along with billions of people around the world. He said the federal holiday on Diwali would allow families and friends to celebrate the festival together. The holiday on this day will prove that the government values ​​the diverse cultural opportunities of the nation.

He said that Diwali celebrations in Queens, New York are amazing and they happen every year. Which goes to show how important this day is to so many people. He said that America’s strength comes from the diverse experiences, cultures and communities that make up this nation.

Meng further said that the Diwali Day Act she introduced is a step towards telling all Americans on the importance of this day and celebrating American diversity. He is keen to pass this bill through the US Congress.

Welcoming the move, New York Assembly member Jennifer Rajkumar said, “This year we have seen our entire state speak with one voice in support of Diwali and recognition of the South Asian community. “My colleague in government, Meng, is now taking the movement nationally with her landmark legislation to declare Diwali a federal holiday,” she said.

Prime Minister Modi will visit America next month. He will be on an official visit to the US from June 21-24. During this, President Joe Biden and his wife will also host a state banquet at the White House on June 22 in honor of PM Modi. PM Modi will stay at a hotel in Washington DC, where the Indian community will organize several cultural events. On June 22, when PM Modi will be welcomed at the White House, a 21-gun salute will be given in his honour.
