Tokyo. Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his Cabinet resigned on Tuesday, paving the way for his potential successor Shigeru Ishiba to take charge as the next prime minister. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi announced that Kishida and his ministers submitted their resignations at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday. Ishiba was elected leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Friday to replace Kishida. Kishida had announced in August his resignation at the end of his three-year term. Ishiba is certain to become prime minister after Tuesday’s vote in parliament as his party’s ruling coalition has a majority in parliament. After this Ishiba will announce his new cabinet.
Ishiba had said on Monday that he was planning to hold parliamentary elections on October 27 after being formally elected the country’s prime minister on Tuesday. Ishiba mentioned the election date while announcing the top leadership of the party before forming his Cabinet on Monday. Kishida is surrounded by corruption allegations.
