British PM Sunak gives clean chit to Braverman in case of fine for driving

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Wednesday that his Home Secretary Suella Braverman would not face an investigation for her alleged actions related to fines after she was caught speeding last year. The Sunday Times newspaper claims that after being caught for speeding, Braverman requested bureaucrats not to take general action against him. The claim was followed by speculation for several days, with Sunak now writing to his minister that he did not think it was an act that constituted misconduct while in office as a minister.

Opposition parties have been demanding that Sunak refer the Indian-origin minister’s case to his independent adviser on code of conduct matters, Sir Larry Magnus, to determine whether any breaches had occurred. In a letter to Braverman, Sunak said, “I have consulted with independent consultants. He has advised that no further investigation is required at this juncture and I have accepted that advice. Based on your letter and our discussion, my decision is that this matter does not come under the purview of ministerial code of conduct.”

Referring to Braverman’s letter apologizing to Sunak, the prime minister said, “As you have acknowledged, better action could have been taken to avoid giving rise to a perception of impropriety. Nevertheless, I am sure that you will take these matters seriously. You have given full information, apologized and expressed regret. Sunak reiterated that he believes integrity, professionalism and accountability are core values ​​of his leadership and it is right that when issues are raised, they are looked into professionally to ensure appropriate action is taken. In an exchange of letters released by Downing Street, the Home Secretary admitted that “if faced with a similar situation again, I would choose a different course of action”.
