A man was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving after a car crashed into the gates of 10 Downing Street in London, the Metropolitan Police said. It is being told that as soon as this incident happened, Rishi Sunak was taken to a safe place through the back door.

The cordon put up by police around the road has since been removed, while armed officers remain on guard at the Prime Minister’s Office as usual. According to reports, the counter-terrorism police are not involved in the ongoing police inquiries at this stage. Police said in a statement that at about 16.20 hours (local time) a car crashed into the gate of Downing Street on Whitehall. Police said armed officers arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving. There is no report of anyone getting injured. The inquiry is on.
