Police said in a statement that at about 16.20 hours (local time) a car crashed into the gate of Downing Street on Whitehall. Police said armed officers arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving. There is no report of anyone getting injured. The inquiry is on.

Officers were seen searching the vehicle and removing a large white sheet. Officers were seen stepping up security operations on Whitehall, London’s main political centre, between Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square.
