Most recently, the Office of the US Trade Representative released its “2024 Foreign Trade Barriers Assessment Report,” which listed China as a country of primary focus. To this, the spokesperson of the Chinese Commerce Ministry responded on April 2 and said that China has paid attention to the relevant situation. China’s view is that whether a country’s trade policy constitutes a barrier should be judged based on whether it violates WTO rules. The US report provides no evidence that China’s relevant policies and practices violate WTO rules. However, it arbitrarily accuses China of so-called “non-market” policies and practices as well as barriers to agricultural products, data policies, etc. China strongly opposes this.

The Chinese spokesperson said that since joining the WTO and as the largest developing member, China has always firmly supported the multilateral trading system, continuously expanded high-level openness, and in the socialist market economic system and legal system. Continuously improves, persists in giving full importance to the decisive role of the market in resource allocation, which has been highly recognized by the international community. The United States should stop making false accusations against other countries, sincerely abide by WTO rules, and jointly safeguard a fair and reasonable international trading system.
