Public Sector Coal India Ltd. (CIL) has crossed the annual coal production target of 700 million tonnes in the financial year 2022-23. CIL said in a statement on Friday that the company produced 700.4 million tonnes of coal till March 30 (Thursday). This was 13 per cent higher than 619.8 million tonnes on the same date a year ago. It said, “The company expects to produce 703.6 million tonnes in 2022-23. In the last financial year, it had produced 622.6 million tonnes of coal.

CIL said that the production target of 700 million tonnes was a challenging task for the company, but all our subsidiaries put in extra efforts to put in their best performance. Production increased by 81 million tonnes on an annual basis in this financial year. This is almost more than double the previous high growth of 44.5 million tonnes produced in the financial year 2015-16. During this period, the production of CIL’s Odisha-based subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) increased by 25 million tonnes on an annual basis. It produced 192.8 million tonnes of coal during this financial year. This was 27.5 per cent of the total production of CIL. At the same time, the production of CIL’s South Eastern Coalfields Limited increased by 24.3 million tonnes to 166 million tonnes as on 30 March. It produced 142.5 million tonnes last year.
