Command handed over to former Netherlands PM Mark Rutte, told what will be NATO’s 3 priorities
Mark Rutte takes over as NATO Secretary General. He was welcomed at NATO headquarters in Brussels by outgoing Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. Rutte said it was a great honor to come here and take up the post of NATO Secretary General, before thanking the Allies for entrusting him with the responsibility of guiding the alliance in the coming years. Secretary General Rutte outlined his three priorities for the coalition.

What will be the 3 priorities?
1. To keep NATO strong and ensure that our security remains effective and credible against all threats.
2. To increase its support for Ukraine and bring it closer to NATO. He said that without a strong, independent Ukraine there can be no lasting security in Europe.

What is NATO and how did it come into existence?
The Berlin Blockade incident in 1948 increased America’s fear. He felt that the time had come to unite to deal with the Soviet Union. In this sequence, it was thought that an organization should be created whose joint forces could protect its member countries. On 4 April 1949, Britain, France, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg signed the Treaty of Brussels. Its objective was collective military assistance and socio-economic cooperation. This was a military organization formed to challenge the Soviet expansion of the capitalist countries. These countries have made a promise to each other. What kind of promise – Promise to help each other in case of danger i.e. promise of collective security. An attack on one country will be considered an attack on all the countries.

Stoltenberg took charge in 2014
Stoltenberg was the 13th Secretary General of NATO, taking office in 2014. Rutte becomes NATO’s top civilian official as Russia marks 1,000 days since its invasion of Ukraine. In his first address after taking office, he said that without a strong, independent Ukraine there could be no lasting security in Europe. He reiterated the commitment made by the leaders of the 32-member organization in 2008 that Ukraine’s rightful place is in NATO.
