The court said that after examining such insurance policies, they should be approved expeditiously. Justice Pratibha M Singh said that following the IRDA circular issued in February, it is now mandatory for insurance companies to offer policies for persons with disabilities.

The Delhi High Court on Friday asked the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) to ask insurance companies to come out with policies for persons with disabilities. The court said that after examining such insurance policies, they should be approved expeditiously. Justice Pratibha M Singh said that following the IRDA circular issued in February, it is now mandatory for insurance companies to offer policies for persons with disabilities.

Justice Singh had last year directed the regulator to convene a meeting of all insurance companies to formulate products for persons with disabilities. “In terms of the circular, the companies have to introduce a product for persons with disabilities…to do so in due course of time,” he said in his order. We have a social responsibility.” The court said that as per its previous directions, IRDA convened a meeting and issued circular on February 27, 2023 with a model policy regarding persons with disabilities.

The court was hearing petitions by some persons with disabilities who sought health insurance coverage from insurance providers. The court asked the three insurance companies involved in the case to submit their policies to IRDA by May 15. Along with this, the regulator was also asked to give a status report on the action taken on it.
