Pakistan’s Cabinet on Saturday approved the formation of an inquiry commission led by a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to probe allegations of interference by intelligence agencies in the work of high court judges. Geo News quoted sources as saying that a one-member commission headed by former Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jilani will investigate the allegations made by the judges through a letter and submit its report in 60 days.

Islamabad High Court (IHC) judges – Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiani, Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri, Justice Babar Sattar, Justice Sardar Ijaz Ishaq Khan, Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir and Justice Saman Fafat Imtiaz on March 26 directed the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) to Wrote a letter and requested to call a judicial conference on the alleged interference of intelligence agencies in judicial matters. Responding to the letter, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faiz Isa, during a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on March 28, had said that interference in the judicial functioning of judges by the executive in the cases would not be tolerated. ”

In the meeting, the Chief Justice and Prime Minister Sharif had agreed to form an inquiry commission. Sources said that when the issue of the letter came up for discussion in the cabinet meeting on Saturday, bureaucrats and other irrelevant persons were requested to leave the room. The cabinet members had given Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif the right to appoint the head of the commission.
