Retired Navy Captain Don Walsh, the first marine explorer to reach the deepest point of the ocean, has died at the age of 92. Walsh died Nov. 12 at his home in Myrtle Point, Oregon, his daughter Elizabeth Walsh said Monday.

In January 1960, Walsh, then a U.S. Navy lieutenant, and Swiss engineer Jacques Picard were sent to a depth of about 7 miles (11 kilometers) below the surface in the Bathyscaphe, a 150-ton submarine.

Both descended to 35,800 feet (11,000 meters) in the Pacific Ocean, about 200 miles (320 kilometers) off Guam, the deepest point in the oceans. This point is part of the ‘Mariana Trench’, the world’s deepest oceanic trench. After spending 20 minutes on the surface he returned.
