New Delhi. The power consumption in the country declined by 0.74 percent to 127.52 billion units (BU) in March, 2023. This is the first time in 31 months that power consumption has decreased. This information has been received from government statistics. The main reason for the shortfall in power consumption is heavy rains due to western disturbances in the country and low temperature in March. Earlier there was a decline in power consumption in August, 2020. At that time the power consumption had come down by more than two per cent to 109.21 billion units from 111.52 billion units in August, 2019. During this period, there was a reduction in power consumption due to the lockdown restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of the corona virus.
Experts have predicted that electricity demand and consumption will increase in April due to further improvement in economic activity as well as rising temperatures. As per the data, the electricity consumption stood at 128.47 billion units (BU) in March, 2022. It was 120.63 billion units in March, 2021. Whereas in March 2020 it was 98.95 billion units. The data shows that the peak power demand i.e. peak supply in a day increased to 209.01 GW in March, 2023. The peak power demand was 199.43 GW in March, 2022 and 185.89 GW in March, 2021. At the same time, before the epidemic, the maximum demand for electricity was 170.16 GW in March 2020.
