“He directed the retailers to ensure that the retail margin for pulses, especially tur (arhar) dal, is not kept at unreasonable levels,” said a government statement.

Amid concerns over rising prices of arhar dal, Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh on Friday directed retailers not to keep their profit margins on pulses, especially arhar dal, at unreasonable levels. In a meeting with the Retailers Association of India (RAI) and major organized retailers, the secretary asked them to fix the retail margin in such a way that the consumption structure of pulses among households is not affected by the price hike. “He directed the retailers to ensure that the retail margin for pulses, especially tur (arhar) dal, is not kept at unreasonable levels,” said a government statement.

Traders of the retail industry expressed their commitment to cooperate fully with the government and also assured that all efforts will be made to keep the prices of pulses under control. Today’s meeting with retail associations and major organized retail chains is part of the multi-stakeholder discussions on pulses prices to ensure availability and affordability of pulses to consumers. Meanwhile, to check hoarding, the department is keeping a close watch on stock disclosures by traders and importers.

According to the Consumer Affairs Ministry data, the average retail price of tur dal in the country has increased by 11.12 per cent to Rs 115 per kg in the last one year. There is pressure on prices as according to the second estimate of the Ministry of Agriculture, the country’s tur production is expected to be lower in the crop year 2022-23 (July-June) at 36.66 million tonnes, compared to 42.22 million in the previous year. Tons happened. Arhar is mainly a Kharif (summer) crop. The country imports some quantity of this pulse to meet the domestic demand.
