Guyana’s President Mohamed Irfan Ali on Saturday said his country has offered 200 acres of land for millet production and in return India will provide technology assistance to increase its production. In his video message for the Global Millets Conference held here, Irfan Ali said that millets are important for ensuring food security across the world. The South American country of Guyana plans to increase the production of millets to enhance national and regional food security.

The country aims to reduce its food import expenditure by the year 2025, and in this direction, millets are an ideal solution to increase self-sufficiency. He said, “Guyana looks forward to strengthening its cooperation with India. Under this, Guyana has offered 200 acres of land for exclusive production of millets and in return India will provide technology and technical support for its production. Irfan Ali said millets are not only an economical and nutritious option but can also combat the uncertainties of climate change.

He promised all possible help in the production and promotion of millets in 17 Caribbean countries. In another video address, Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde said millets would go a long way towards addressing the food security challenges not only of sub-Saharan countries like Ethiopia, but of the entire African continent and the world. He said that the ideas of this conference will also help in shaping the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
