India, Australia will continue to work towards vibrant bilateral friendship: PM Modi


Modi held wide-ranging talks with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese during the visit and also attended a special community event here. He also traveled to Japan to attend the G-7 summit and visited Papua New Guinea before arriving in Australia.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that India and Australia will continue to work towards a vibrant bilateral friendship which is also in global interest. Modi left for home after concluding his three-day visit to Australia. Modi held wide-ranging talks with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese during the visit and also attended a special community event here. He also traveled to Japan to attend the G-7 summit and visited Papua New Guinea before arriving in Australia.

India-Australia signed the Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement (MMPA) following wide-ranging discussions between Modi and Albanese on Wednesday. This will help in the movement of students, professionals, researchers, academicians and others. They also reiterated their shared ambition for an early conclusion of the ambitious Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), which is expected to significantly expand bilateral trade ties.

The two leaders welcomed progress towards the establishment of the India-Australia ‘Green Hydrogen Task Force’. During the talks, the terms of reference of the Task Force were agreed upon. Following the talks, Albanese also announced the establishment of a new Australian Consulate General in Bengaluru, primarily to link Australian businesses to India’s rapidly growing digital economy and innovation ecosystem. The Prime Minister used the fast-paced format of cricket to describe the rapidly growing India-Australia relationship and said that the relationship between the two countries has entered the ‘T20’.

Modi tweeted, India-Australia friendship is very special. He also met Governor General of Australia David Hurley and Leader of the Opposition Peter Dutton. Dutton tweeted, wonderful to be reunited with a great friend of Australia Narendra Modi. Australia is proud of the special and growing relationship it has with India and can only grow stronger in the years to come. Modi along with Albanese on Tuesday addressed the Indian community living in Australia at a special event organized at the Kudos Bank Arena.

The Prime Minister said that the strongest and biggest foundation of India-Australia relations is mutual trust and respect. The two leaders also announced the renaming of a suburb in Sydney to Little India, reflecting the strong bond between the two strategic partners. Modi announced that India would open a consulate in Brisbane to fulfill a long-pending demand of the Indian diaspora. He also interacted with prominent Australian personalities working in various fields such as science, artificial intelligence, social work and arts and music, and encouraged them to contribute to strengthening India-Australia relations.

In Papua New Guinea, he co-hosted the first Forum for Indo-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) summit with his counterpart James Marape and met leaders of Pacific island nations to boost bilateral ties. During the summit, Prime Minister Modi told the Pacific island nations that they can look to India as a reliable development partner because it respects their priorities and its approach to cooperation is based on human values.

Both the leaders also held bilateral talks. In Japan, Modi participated in the summit of the G-7 advanced economies. During this, he met several world leaders including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron, Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. He attended the third Quad summit face-to-face with US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida and Albinez.
