India and Japan have jointly agreed on cooperation with Sri Lanka to strengthen regional connectivity in the strategically important Indo-Pacific region. According to the news of ‘Daily Mirror Lanka’, Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay said that India and Japan share broad interests in a peaceful, progressive and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. He said this at a function here in the presence of Japanese Ambassador Mizukoshi Hideaki. Describing Sri Lanka as an important member of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IROA) countries, Baglay said that India, Japan and Sri Lanka have a huge opportunity to work here for the prosperity of the people and benefit all the parties.

“It should be according to the priorities of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is at the happy confluence of three important pillars of India’s foreign policy.” Ambassador Hideaki of Japan said that during the recent visit of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to India, the two countries exchanged views on cooperation with Sri Lanka and agreed to work together.

“I believe the best area to show how the two countries can work together for the long-term benefit of the entire region, including Sri Lanka, is connectivity,” he was quoted as saying in the report. For this, the perspectives and insights of countries in the region are important, and this report precisely addresses this.” Sri Lanka is a key part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). But China’s abortive projects, including the Hambantota port in Sri Lanka, have drawn much criticism.
