Chennai, . Pacer Akash Madhwal took five wickets (5/5) in the IPL 2023 match played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here on Wednesday to help Mumbai Indians beat Lucknow Super Giants by 81 runs in the Eliminator and make their way into Qualifier 2. Chasing a target of 183 runs, at one stage Lucknow were 68/2 in eight overs. But were all out for 101 runs in 16.3 overs. Madhwal finished with 5/5 in 3.1 overs. He bowled the best in IPL playoff history.

Mumbai have booked their place in Qualifier 2, where they will face defending champions Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday.

Chasing 183 runs, Mumbai achieved success in the second over. Madhwal removes Prerak Mankad at deep point. Two overs later, Meyers pulled a Chris Jordan delivery towards mid-on.

Mumbai could have got their third wicket if Nehal Wadhera, running in from deep cover in the fifth over, had not misjudged Marcus Stoinis’s catch. From there, Stoinis edged Cameron Green for a four, before pulling Hrithik Shokeen twice through square leg and mid-wicket for back-to-back boundaries.

He then hit a straight six and 18 runs came in the last over of the power-play. But Krunal was dismissed by Piyush Chawla in the ninth over.

Madhwal’s return in the tenth over blew the game open for Mumbai. After Ayush Badoni’s off stump was sent for a cartwheel ride, Nicholas Pooran edged past the keeper for a golden duck.

Stoinis was run out in the 12th over after a collision with Deepak Hooda while taking the second run, followed by Krishnappa Gowtham in the next over. Madhwal had Ravi Bishnoi caught at long-on before another dreadful mix-up got Hooda to be run out.

In his final over, Madhwal completed his five overs with a yorker at the base of Mohsin Khan’s off stump to seal an impressive and emphatic win for Mumbai.

Brief Scores: Mumbai Indians 182/8 in 20 overs (Cameron Green 41, Suryakumar Yadav 33, Naveen-ul-Haq 4/38, Yash Thakur 3/34) beat Lucknow Supergiants 101 in 16.3 overs (Marcus Stoinis 40, Akash Madhwal 5/5) beat by 81 runs.
