King Charles III addresses German Parliament, meets Chancellor Scholz

King Charles III on Thursday became the first British head of state to address the Bundestag, Germany’s parliament. He also met German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during his visit focused on strengthening ties between the two countries. Addressing MPs and other dignitaries to a packed lower house, Charles stressed the close ties between Britain and Germany. During this, he mentioned his family ties with the Royal House of Hanover and the current economic, scientific, cultural and military cooperation between the two countries.

Charles said London and Berlin have provided Ukraine with a great deal of assistance in its efforts to deter Russian aggression. When Charles finished his speech, MPs stood and applauded for a long time, which is rarely seen in the German parliament. Charles (74) arrived in Berlin on Wednesday on his first foreign trip after ascending to the British throne and is accompanied by Queen Camilla. He was greeted by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and a crowd of people at the historic Brandenburg Gate in the capital. This was followed by a royal banquet in honor of Charles III at the Presidential Palace. Significantly, after separating from the European Union, the British government is trying to deepen relations with Europe’s partners.
