Mrigasira Karthi Festival: Distribution of ‘fish prasadam’, which is believed to be a cure for asthma, by the Hyderabad Bathini family, was held at the Nampally Exhibition Ground in Hyderabad on Friday. This year the event was organized after a gap of three years due to the Kovid-19 pandemic. The Bathini Gaur family living in the Char Minar area has been treating asthma patients through it for the last 150 years. They put medicinal herbs in the mouth of the live fish and asthma patients have to ingest this fish to find an effective cure for their disease.

Bathini Gaur Family

The Bathini Gaur family says that they have a monopoly on this medicine. This medicine is given completely free of cost by this family. This family says that this is a medicine whose method is passed on from generation to generation. Every year on the day of ‘Mrigashira Karthi’ ‘Machali Prasadam’ (consisting of Mural fish and herbal paste) is given. The formula of ‘Machali Prasadam’ is said to have been told by a holy man to an elder of the family.

Animal Husbandry Minister of Telangana tweeted

Telangana Animal Husbandry Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav, who initiated the distribution of ‘fish prasadam’, tweeted that the state government has made all arrangements for the occasion. He said that the government has taken steps to ensure that lakhs of people coming from different states to collect the prasad do not face any inconvenience.

The ‘fish prasadam’ consists of murral fish and herbal paste. The medicinal properties of ‘fish prasadam’ have often been questioned by scientists, rationalists and others. However, people throng the city every year to collect ‘Prasadam’.
