New alert issued for heavy rain in Nepal, more than 240 dead due to floods and landslides
Rain Alert: Nepal Home Minister Ramesh Lalkar has directed officials and disaster management agencies to be on high alert as according to the weather forecast, there is a possibility of heavy rainfall in Kosi and Bagmati provinces as well as Kathmandu Valley. The warning came after the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology cited potential risks of more heavy rain in parts of both provinces.
Nepal government has appealed to the people to remain alert
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), chief district officials and local governments were urged to remain alert to the potential risk of disasters. The ministry also appealed to the public to remain alert and prepared to reduce the potential risks of heavy rainfall and its consequences. Nepal’s Home Minister said, I have instructed the chief district officers of Kosi and Bagmati provinces and heads of all security agencies in disaster-prone provinces to remain alert. The author urged travelers to be careful while traveling in view of the condition of major highways and roads in view of landslides and floods caused by rains.
Till now 13071 people have been rescued
Home Ministry spokesperson Rishiram Tiwari said that so far 13,071 people have been rescued from flood affected areas. The rain has caused widespread devastation in many provinces till Sunday, due to which thousands of people have been displaced. Large parts of eastern and central Nepal are submerged since Friday. More than 20,000 security personnel, including Nepal Army, Armed Police Forces and Nepal Police, have been deployed for search, rescue and relief distribution.
