New rules of IPL put restrictions on overseas players, now foreign players will be seen less!
The presence of foreign players in the IPL has always been a special attraction. However, due to the increasing number of T20 leagues in the world and the increasing workload of international cricket, many times star overseas players have ignored this biggest T20 league in the world. Many times the attitude of these players is arbitrary. Overseas players have got a very favorable environment in IPL. He has also won a huge amount in the auction. However, now such new rules have come in IPL which are going to stop the arbitrary actions of overseas players.
In the new retention policy implemented by BCCI on Saturday, many important decisions have been taken keeping in mind the foreign players. Any overseas player who will be a part of IPL will be bound by these rules.
One rule related to foreign players is especially making headlines. If this rule is broken, the overseas player may be banned for two years. Under this, if any foreign player withdraws his name from the league after being sold in an auction, then he will be banned for the next two seasons.
Obviously this decision has been taken keeping in mind the interests of the franchise. When a team selects a foreign player, it makes its strategy accordingly. But when that player withdraws his name at the last moment, the balance and strategy of that team can be badly affected. Sometimes players withdraw their names due to workload and sometimes the reasons for not playing are personal. Now if these players do this then they will have to face a ban of two seasons.
This rule dictates that only overseas players who are serious about the IPL and committed to their team will give their names in the auction. The other aspect of this is that some foreign players may not give their names to avoid the two-year ban. This means that now players like Mark Wood, Gut Attinson, Jason Roy will participate in IPL after thinking very carefully. Either these players will not participate in the IPL or will be available to play in the season. Yes, if the player gets injured and is not available to play, then this rule will not apply to him. However, this injury will also have to be verified by the overseas player’s respective domestic cricket board.
Apart from this, there is another important decision which can have a big impact on the participation of foreign players in IPL. Now these players will have to register in the mega auction of IPL. If he does not do this, he will not be able to participate in the mini auction to be held in the next season. Till now the mini auction was dominated by foreign players. Examples like Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins are in front of everyone who created a new record in terms of the amount sold in the auction.
In the mega auction of IPL, teams have to spend huge money on many players. In this auction he forms his core team. But mini auctions are only about picking selected players and it is mostly in these mini auctions that records are made of players being sold for unbelievable sums. Last time Mitchell Starc had come only in the mini auction. Now he will not be able to do this. In such a situation, the participation of players like Starc who have played less IPL may reduce further. Or these players will be seen participating in the cash rich league for the entire scheme.
Apart from these rules, the biggest blow to foreign players is going to be the rule of fixing the maximum fee. IPL has decided to fix the maximum price for foreign players in the mini auction. This rule says that the maximum price for any foreign player in this auction will not exceed Rs 18 crore. The selling price of a foreign player in the mini auction will be decided in two ways – the highest retained price and the highest selling price of the player in the big auction. Whichever is lower, the player will receive the same price.
That means, if a player has been retained for Rs 18 crore, but in the big auction the most expensive player has been sold for Rs 15 crore, then the overseas player will not get more than Rs 15 crore in the small auction. Yes, if the franchise wants, it can make any big bid on any overseas player. But the player will get only a maximum of Rs 18 crore from that bid. The remaining amount will go to BCCI which will be spent for the welfare of the players. Obviously all these rules will greatly affect the participation of overseas players in IPL.
