Pakistan: Senior PTI leader Awan resigns from the party

Firdous Ashiq Awan, a senior leader of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, resigned on Friday. He has resigned amid the government’s ongoing crackdown against the opposition over the May 9 violence. Awan, 53, who served as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting from 2019 to 2020, said that now former Prime Minister Khan and Pakistan have parted ways. After Imran Khan was arrested by Pakistan Rangers on May 9, violent demonstrations started in Pakistan.

His party workers vandalized about a dozen military establishments. The army headquarters in Rawalpindi was also attacked by the mob. Police put the death toll in the violent clashes at 10. Awan, a former federal minister, said she was parting ways with PTI because of the party’s “violent and terrorist activities”, Dawn newspaper reported. She said, “I believe that respect for the martyrs and the country is part of our faith. Those who insulted the martyrs attacked the foundation and ideology of Pakistan.

In a jolt to Khan, his close aide and former information minister Fawad Chaudhry had on Wednesday resigned from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. A day before this, former Pakistan minister and Imran Khan’s close aide Shireen Mazari left PTI.
