London. Former India coach Ravi Shastri is very disappointed with the way Cheteshwar Pujara was dismissed in India’s first innings against Australia in the World Test Championship final at The Oval. He said that the experienced batsman should have applied himself better. Pujara attempted to leave the ball to Cameron Green which went in and hit the stumps. Pujara was dismissed for just 14 and the Indian team management must have been more disappointed that opener Shubman Gill had got out in a similar fashion a few overs earlier against Scott Boland.

Shastri said Gill is young and will learn from his mistakes but he expected better shot selection from Pujara. Pujara has spent the last few months in England, playing county cricket for Sussex, scoring three centuries and a half-century since April 2023.

Commenting on the match, Shastri said on air, his front foot was not right. It should go towards the ball; He was trying to play the ball and then decided to leave it. You see, the way he left the ball, his off-stump was exposed. Front foot still on middle stump when it should have gone towards off stump. You look at his front foot. It should be towards the ball. He thought the ball was outside off stump. It is a big mistake in taking this decision.

Shastri said that Pujara himself would be disappointed with the way he got out.
