Rohit Sharma remembers WTC final amid IPL, big statement on Team India

New Delhi: Indian captain Rohit Sharma believes that by reaching the final of the Test Championship (WTC) for the second time in a row, the players of his team presented a great example of their spirit, especially when the team lost in the title match in 2021. India will face Australia in the WTC final starting June 7. In a video released on the website of the Board of Cricket in India (BCCI), Rohit said, “After the first World Test Championship final in Southampton, we immediately united and started preparing for the next cycle.” We played really good cricket this cycle. Challenges were presented to us many times and not only some players but all the players showed great spirit to overcome it. Rohit heaped praise on his teammates who made a spectacular comeback after the disappointment of losing to New Zealand in the 2021 final. He said, ‘It is a cycle of two years and during this time we played a lot of Test matches. Many players played in this cycle. On every occasion a player took charge. The kind of performance we were expecting from him, he performed like that.

India will enter the next WTC final without three of its key players Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer. All these three players are injured. Apart from Rohit, only Pant and Iyer averaged above 40 runs per innings in the first WTC cycle, while Bumrah took 45 wickets in 10 matches in that period. Senior batsman Cheteshwar Pujara said that the team should remember the contribution of these three players.

Pujara said, ‘There are many players who contributed for the team. Some of these players are no longer part of the team, but it is important that we remember the efforts of each player who contributed to this cycle. Senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said that making it to the WTC final for the second time in a row is no small feat.

Ashwin said, ‘It definitely started from 2014. Mahendra Singh Dhoni had retired and all of us players had played very few Test matches and we had to start our journey from there. “It was not an easy task without senior players but I can say that the relentless efforts we put in has paid off in the last two WTC cycles,” he said.

Ashwin said, ‘We have made it to the final for the second time in a row and it is not an easy achievement. We would have liked to have won the series 3-1 or 3-0 in India but Australia played some brilliant cricket. We could not get the desired result but we maintained consistency in our performance which resulted in us being in the finals today.
