Security has been beefed up and barricades installed near the Indian High Commission in London on Wednesday in view of a planned demonstration by some British Sikh groups. Banners calling for so-called “national demonstrations” by groups such as the Federation of Sikh Organizations (FSO) and the Sikh Youth Jathbandiya have been circulating on social media ahead of Sunday’s violent protest outside India House. The Government of India had strongly protested against the lack of security arrangements outside its diplomatic mission.

During the protest pro-Khalistan flags were waved and windows of the mission were broken and attempts were made to bring down the tricolor. Several officers have been patrolling there since the weekend and Metropolitan Police vehicles are parked outside ‘India Place’. It is being claimed that Wednesday’s planned protest is “in response to the Indian police action in Punjab”. The Indian High Commission in London is working to counter misinformation about current events in Punjab and police action against separatist group ‘Waris Punjab De’.

In a video message on Twitter, Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswamy said, “I want to assure all your friends here in the UK, especially those who have brothers, sisters and relatives in Punjab, that the sensational information being circulated on social media, There is no truth in them.” He said, “The situation in your motherland is not as it is being told. The elected Chief Minister of the State and the local police administration have given detailed information in this regard including television interviews, please refer to the same.

Don’t believe the misleading information of a handful of people.” Giving an update on the administration’s action since March 18, Doraiswamy said that the Punjab Police has launched a campaign against elements of ‘Waris Punjab De’, specifically against Criminal cases have been registered against Amritpal Singh, the head of this organization. He said that all those arrested would be protected from their constitutional rights to their legal rights and reiterated that all communication services including mobile telephone network and internet were working in the state. British Sikh MPs Tanmanjit Singh and Preet Kaur Gill of the Labor Party were among those who raised concerns about people living in their parliamentary constituencies in the UK having relatives in Punjab.
