Kuala Lumpur: India’s star players PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy stormed into the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Masters Super 500 badminton tournament with contrasting wins but young sensation Lakshya Sen suffered a loss here on Thursday. While Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist and seeded sixth here, easily beat Japan’s Aya Ohori in straight games in women’s singles, Prannoy struggled for three games to get past China’s Shi Feng Li. Srikanth defeated India Open champion and eighth seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in straight games.

Taking the court first, World No. 13 Sindhu dominated Ohori and defeated Japan’s World No. 28 21-16, 21-11 in a match that lasted 40 minutes. Sindhu will take on Yi Man Zhang of China in the quarterfinals. World No. 9 Prannoy made a brilliant comeback after losing the first game to beat world No. 11 Li 13-21, 21-16, 21-11 in a match that lasted one hour and 10 minutes.

Prannoy will now face Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto, who won the Japan Open last year and Spain Masters this year. Srikanth had faced defeat in the three matches he played against Vitidsarn earlier, but here he managed to win 21-19, 21-19. He will next face Indonesian qualifier Christian Adinata. India’s youngster Lakshya Sen, however, crashed out after losing 14-21, 19-21 to Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long.
