New Delhi: The government has taken strict action against the companies making fake medicines. Licenses of 18 companies manufacturing spurious drugs have been canceled across the country. The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) and state regulators inspected 76 pharma companies across the country as part of a crackdown against the production of substandard drugs. Out of these, licenses of 18 companies have been canceled for making spurious and adulterated medicines. Official sources gave this information on Tuesday. He informed that in the last 15 days these inspections were done in 20 states and union territories. An official source said action has been taken against 76 companies as part of the first phase of the special drive against manufacturing of substandard drugs.

According to sources, licenses of 18 pharma companies have been canceled for production of spurious and adulterated medicines. In addition, show cause notices have been issued to 26 companies. Under the special drive, the regulator has identified 203 companies and most of the companies are in Himachal Pradesh (70), Uttarakhand (45) and Madhya Pradesh (23). Recently, questions have been raised about the quality of medicines manufactured by Indian companies. In February, Tamil Nadu-based company Global Pharma Healthcare recalled all its eye drops in the US for allegedly affecting eyesight.

Last year, child deaths in Gambia and Uzbekistan were linked to cough syrup made in India. Uzbekistan arrested three employees of a pharmaceutical company from Noida in connection with the death of 18 children last year. He was accused of making and selling adulterated medicine. The drug regulators of the Center and UP had checked the company’s products. 22 medicines of the company were found to be adulterated and spurious.
