athensCommonwealth Games silver-medallist long jumper Murali Sreesankar on Wednesday clocked a season’s best of 8.18m to clinch the gold medal at the international event in Kallithea near the Greek capital. Defended the gold he had won last year with a distance of 8.18m in his sixth and last attempt at the competition. It was the sixth best performance of his career. He had won the gold last year with an effort of 8.31m.

Sreeshankar made efforts of 7.94m, 8.17m, 8.11m, 8.04m, 8.01m and 8.18m. He, however, could not clear the qualifying standard of 8.25m for the 2023 World Athletics Championships. This was Sreeshankar’s second international gold of the season. He had won gold at the MVA High Performance Meet in Chula Vista, USA on April 30 with a wind-assisted effort of 8.29m. National record holder Jesvin Aldrin finished second with a throw of 7.85m, while Australia’s Yolen Rucker won the bronze with a throw of 7.80m.
