hamilton Sri Lanka’s loss to New Zealand in the third ODI on Friday has resulted in Sri Lanka failing to finish eighth in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League table.

Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and decided to bat first in the crucial match. But the performance of the Sri Lankan batsmen against the New Zealand fast bowlers was lackluster and the entire team returned to the pavilion after scoring 157 runs in 41.3 overs. Sri Lanka’s batsmen struggled to cross the 150-run mark, with killer performances from Matt Henry (3/14), Henry Shipley (3/32) and Daryl Mitchell (3/32).

Pathum Nisaka (57 off 64 balls), Dasun Shanaka (31 off 36 balls) and Chamika Karunaratne (24 off 42 balls) were the only batsmen who faced the Kiwi bowlers to some extent.

In response, New Zealand got off to a poor start, losing three wickets in the first seven overs. Four of their batsmen Chad Bowes, Tom Blundell, Daryl Mitchell and Tom Latham failed to reach double digit scores

But a 100-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Will Young (86 not out) and Henry Nicholls (44 not out) eased New Zealand’s way.

With this victory, New Zealand won the three-match series 2-0. With this defeat, Sri Lanka failed to overtake West Indies (88 points) for direct entry into the ODI World Cup. Sri Lanka ended their campaign on 81 points.
