Colombo. Sri Lanka has omitted fast bowling all-rounder and former captain Dasun Shanaka from its 16-member ODI squad to face Afghanistan in the upcoming series from February 9 to 14.

Apart from them, middle-order batsman Nuwanidu Fernando and legspinner Jeffrey Vandersay have also been dropped from the ODI team.

Since January 2023, Shanaka has scored only one half-century in this format. Which shows that he is going through a bad phase.

Shanaka was in Sri Lanka’s white-ball squad for the home series against Zimbabwe, but was dropped from the third ODI after scoring eight and seven in the first two matches.

In his place, Chamika Karunaratne is expected to play the vacant fast bowling all-rounder role in the playing-11.

Captain Kusal Mendis is joined by Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Sadira Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Shevon Daniels and Zenith Liyanage, who was the player of the series against Zimbabwe.

Wanindu Hasaranga and Mahesh Theekshana will lead the spin-bowling department, which also includes Akila Dhananjay and all-rounders Dunith Velalez and Sahan Arachige. Apart from Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka and Pramod Madusanka are the other fast bowlers in the team.
