Kolkata: Tea Research Association (TRA) has launched a study to assess the status of carbon emissions in the tea industry. An officer gave this information. The Tea Board of India has convened a meeting to learn the results of this collaborative study and to discuss and formulate policies to achieve the goal of net-zero emissions for the industry, Nayantara Pal Chaudhary, chairperson of TRA, a tea research body, said at its 59th annual general meeting. He also urged the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to prepare a rating system for tea in the country. A low carbon emission industry like tea has a lot of scope to earn carbon credits.
‘ He said in this meeting, “However, no systematic study was done on this subject. TRA has launched a collaborative study on life cycle assessment of tea gardens and factories to scientifically ascertain the carbon footprint of the tea industry. The study is expected to be completed by the end of next year. TRA can plan future strategies to deal with issues related to reducing carbon emissions.
Paul Chaudhary said that the country’s tea production in the financial year 2022-23 was 1375 million kilograms, while the production in the year 2021-22 was 1344 million kilograms. Its average price was Rs 201 per kg. He said that in the calendar year 2022, 231 million kilograms of tea was exported, whereas in the calendar year 2021, the export was 200.79 million kilograms.
