Sugar production marginally down to 28.1 million tonnes in marketing year 2022-23 till March 15

The sugar marketing year runs from October to September. According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), around 336 sugar mills were operational during the period under review, as against 438 in the year-ago period.

The country’s sugar production stood at 28.18 million tonnes with a slight decrease till March 15 in the current marketing year. Industry body ISMA has given this information on Friday. In the same period of the marketing year 2021-22, sugar production was 28.45 million tonnes. The sugar marketing year runs from October to September. According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), around 336 sugar mills were operational during the period under review, as against 438 in the year-ago period.

The country’s sugar production after diversion for ethanol production was 28.18 million tonnes during October-March 15 of the current marketing year 2022-23, the industry body said in a statement. Production in Maharashtra, the country’s leading sugar producer, declined to 11.99 million tonnes during the current marketing year from October to March 15, as against 10.99 million tonnes in the year-ago period.

Production in Karnataka, the country’s third largest sugar producing state, also saw a marginal decline at 5.35 million tonnes as against 5.54 million tonnes in the same period last year, ISMA said in a statement. Sugar production in Uttar Pradesh, the second largest producer of sugar in the country, increased marginally to 7.96 million tonnes in the current marketing year till March 15 from 7.83 million tonnes in the year-ago period. Production in other states increased marginally to 4.68 million tonnes as compared to 4.18 million tonnes earlier.

ISMA said that about 31.1 lakh tonnes of sugar has been used for ethanol production during the said period. ISMA in January lowered its sugar production forecast for 2022-23 to 34 million tonnes from its earlier estimate of 36.5 million tonnes released in October 2022. In the marketing year 2021-22, sugar production was 3.58 crore tonnes.
