Suniel Shetty Interview: Sunil Shetty- I didn’t disappear of my own free will, people had lost faith in me

Veteran actor Sunil Shetty, who has spent almost 33 years in the industry, has done many memorable and hit roles in his career, but today he believes that OTT is proving to be a game changer for him. After series like ‘Dharavi Bank’, these days he is in discussion with his upcoming series ‘Hunter Tutega Nahi Todega’ on OTT. In this exclusive interview, he talks about his series, action sequences, his mistakes, son Ahaan, daughter Athiya and wife Maana.

You were the one who started the action hero trend with ‘Balwaan’ in the nineties and now you are coming back with the action oriented series Hunter Tutega Nahi Todega, how are you feeling?

Feeling very emotional, because I didn’t disappear of my own accord. I made mistakes, films didn’t work, after that people don’t want to support you, don’t want to work with you. The skill is the same, the talent is there. Yes, I agree that mistakes have been made. I am not one of those people who make a film for themselves and cast themselves in it. People had lost faith in me, so when Saregama came to me, I asked them are you sure you want to make a series with me, as it would be very expensive. He said that he wants to bring back my old action spirit with me. This was a big deal for me, it increased my ten bottles of blood. On this proposal, I felt that I should also do such work and action that people would ask whether it is really Sixty Plus? Can he really do such action and really when you see the action, whether you pause or rewind, that person on the screen is Sunil Shetty, I have done each and every action scene myself. I know that with an age your body has some limitations, so I did all those action scenes by trending myself, rehearsing.

We have been witness to your work for a long time and know that the mistakes made by you in choosing films were due to friendship. You did many bad films just for the sake of relationships.
You people know and understand this and that is what kept us alive. I think that’s why the above remembers this thing and you get another chance. Ahaan and Athiya (his artist kids) get so much love. Those people often come and say that Papa, you have so much goodwill that we get only love and respect from everywhere. I tell them that I have done something good in my life that my children are getting such love and respect. By the way, you made me emotional by reminding me of the old days. (his eyes go moist)

After crossing 60, how much does your heart beat while doing action now? How scared?
You are more fearless when you are young, but the responsibilities of growing age make you cautious. We get a little scared. As far as action is concerned, I used to do action after thinking carefully, with full training. My action team was very good. There were new kids in the team, but they handled the load very well. He had full faith in me and positive energy was coming from all sides on the set, so the work went very well. The association of all the actors like Esha Deol, Rahul Dev, Barkha, Karanveer Sharma among my fellow actors was very beautiful.

Do you believe that OTT has proved to be a game changer for you too?
Absolutely. OTT gave me an opportunity to come back. Otherwise people had stopped asking actors like us. It is true that films like ‘Hera Pheri 3’, ‘Awara Pagal Deewana 2’ are being made, but somewhere in it the wonder of OTT’s ‘Dharavi Bank’ is also there. The beauty of OTT is that here the artist gets a chance to do a completely different kind of work, which has many layers and all are deep. On OTT, age does not bother you, the character has its own strength. Like now in ‘Dharavi Bank’, my cold-blooded character was well received. Sometimes in a two-and-a-half hour film, you are not able to deliver your emotion in that way. But when you talk about 8 episodes in a web series, then there is a lot of time to decorate the character.

There was news of Akshay’s return in ‘Hera Pheri 3’. Sanjay Dutt is also going to be seen in it. Will you get a chance to work with your old colleagues?
I am very happy because everything is solved. Now Baba (Sanjay Dutt) has also come in it, so it has taken off. Baba is a wonderful actor. When it comes to comedy, Baba proves to be number one. I am very excited about ‘Her Pheri 3’.

After your daughter Athiya’s marriage, how much more responsibility do you feel as a father as you now have KL Rahul’s family with you?
To be honest, somewhere Rahul was the first family. Her simplicity hooked me to her at first sight. He seemed like my son Ahaan to me, indeed he is just like Ahaan for me too. Introverted, calm, down to earth. This is the reason why when people ask me how it feels to be a father-in-law, I say, I don’t even know that role. I am Rahul’s father as well. I love him as much as I love Ahaan. We had a very small wedding, we were afraid that people would say we were not invited, but people appreciated it. I was able to fulfill the responsibility of performing my daughter’s marriage. I am happy, a son has come home.

Your son Ahaan is also now carrying forward your acting legacy. He is also a down to earth artist like you.
Yes, I just want him to do a good job in the industry. Look I live with my parents. The urge to act came from me, but he got the values from his grand parents. They say that the interest is more dear than the original and the way my parents have handled the interest is wonderful. Always remember, children learn by watching, not by speaking. Today my mother has turned 80 years old, but her face is radiant. Mana (his wife) also gives a lot of time to the children and all these reasons have connected my children with my values.

Suppose you have been married for more than 30 years. How much do you guys complement each other over the years?
After many years of marriage, the couple become like brothers and sisters. Living together for so many years, they start understanding each other a lot. Sometimes I and Mana unconsciously also wear clothes of the same colour. Mana’s company made every stage of life beautiful. Now look, we are waiting to become grandparents. We are both friends and do not hesitate to tell each other what is in our heart. It means that if it does not go anywhere, then I also do not go. I feel incomplete without him. His hand, isn’t it, always holds me tight. It has become a habit, and when Mana is not together, Athiya asks me, Papa where is that holding hand of yours? Our relationship is very beautiful.
