At least seven people have died and more than 700 others have been injured in an earthquake in Taiwan. This is the most powerful earthquake to hit Taiwan in the last 25 years. A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the country’s Nantou County in 1999, killing more than 2,500 people and injuring more than 1,300 others. After this earthquake, power supply was disrupted in the entire city. The intensity of the earthquake was estimated at 7.2 on the Richter scale.

Train services have been suspended across the country. This earthquake was so powerful that it caused a tsunami on two islands of Japan. Relief and rescue work is being carried out rapidly. Many houses and buildings were reduced to piles of cards. Many pictures are going viral on social media after the earthquake. When Taiwan was shaken by the threat of a strong earthquake, nearby Japan felt the most danger. Rescue operations are being conducted to rescue people trapped in buildings in Taiwan. Tsunami alert has been issued in Taiwan, Japan and Philippines. Schools and government offices have been closed. A school built before World War II has also been completely damaged.

Army has been deployed in the areas affected by the massive earthquake in Taiwan. The USGS said several aftershocks struck Taipei, including one with a magnitude of 6.5 and a depth of about 11.8 km. Taiwan’s Central Meteorological Administration said that there is a possibility of three or four more earthquakes in the coming and their intensity could be from 6.5 to 7.0. A five-story building in Hualien partially collapsed on the first floor, causing the building to tilt at an angle of 45 degrees. According to the report, the earthquake in Taiwan was so powerful that its tremors were felt till Shanghai. Chinese media says that earthquake tremors have been felt in Feiju, Ningne, China.
