Tapan Sinha Birth Anniversary: Tapan Sinha was one of the most prominent Indian film directors of his time, forming a brilliant quartet with Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen. He was primarily a Bengali filmmaker, who worked in both Hindi cinema and Bengali cinema. Tapan Sinha had made films like ‘Sagina’ (1974), ‘Safed Haathi’ (1977), ‘Man and Woman’ (1982), and ‘Ek Doctor Ki Maut’ (1991) in Bengali as well as Hindi. Which was acclaimed and widely appreciated.

His film ‘Aapne Jan’ made in 1968 was a political symbolic film, by making it in Hindi with the name ‘Mere Apne’, lyricist Gulzar started his directorial innings. In 1960, Gulzar adapted the film ‘Khuddhito Pashan’ based on Tagore’s story and made a film named ‘Lekin’ in 1990. His film ‘Gulp Holeu Satyee’ made in 1968 was remade in Hindi by Hrishikesh Mukherjee with the name ‘Bawarchi’ (1972). Tapan Sinha’s works have varied in quality and styles in his long and prosperous career spanning nearly five decades in the film world.
His films were full of social concern and entertainment.
Tapan Sinha always made low budget films. His films with social concern were always successful in providing healthy entertainment to the audience. This is the reason why he received national awards 19 times. Apart from social, comedy and children films, he paid more attention to making literature based films. ‘Kabuliwala’ and ‘Khudhito Pashan’ are his famous films based on the works of Rabindranath Tagore. He made the film ‘Ankush’ on Narayan Ganguly’s story Sainik. Shailajanand Mukherjee’s film ‘Uphaar’ on Krishna has been a popular film. Tapan Sinha’s literature based films were successful in attracting the audience with their cinematic quality rather than being cumbersome. Apart from Bengali, he also gave successful films in Hindi. Sometimes Tapan da made Bengal’s most expensive star Uttam Kumar or Ashok Kumar in Hindi the hero of his films. He underlined in more depth the Naxalism and women oppression that originated in Bengal. ‘Aadmi Aur Aurat’ became very popular with Amol Palekar.

Entered the film world as a technician
Tapan Sinha, a fan of American directors William Wyler and John Ford, entered the film world as a technician. A total of 41 films are recorded in his film career, out of which 19 won national awards and also received a lot of appreciation in international film festivals held in London, Venice, Moscow and Berlin. India’s first Life Time Achievement Award was given to Tapan Sinha. On June 20, 2008, West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi visited his house in New Alipore and gave him this award.
Tapan Sinha was honored with Dadasaheb Phalke Award
Apart from this, Tapan Sinha was also awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honor of Indian cinema, in the year 2006. Tapan Sinha, honored with Dadasaheb Phalke, the biggest award of the Indian film industry, died on January 15, 2009 in Kolkata after a long illness. 84 year old Tapan Sinha was suffering from pneumonia. He was admitted to CMRI in December 2008. At the same time, his actress wife Arundhati Devi died in 1990 itself.
