Telecom subscriber base up marginally at 117.07 crore in January: TRAI

The number of telecom subscribers in the country increased marginally to 117.07 crore in January, 2023. This growth has happened in the fixed line or wire line category. This information has been given in the report released by Telecom Regulatory TRAI on Friday. In the wireline segment, there was an increase of 2.8 lakh subscribers while in the mobile telephony segment, nine thousand subscribers were added. According to the report, even though Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel combined added 2.9 lakh new customers, BSNL and Vodafone Idea (VIL) lost 2.8 lakh customers.

The number of telephone subscribers in India is set to increase from 117.03 crore at the end of December 2022 to 117.07 crore at the end of January 2023, said the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in its monthly report for January 2023. The monthly growth rate during this period was 0.03 percent. Wireline connections in the country increased from 2.74 crore in December to 2.77 crore in January. The growth in the wireline category was mainly driven by Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, which added 2.1 lakh and 1.1 lakh new customers, respectively.

Public sector MTNL declined the most in the category. It lost 29,857 of its customers. It was followed by BSNL which lost 19,781 wireline customers, Tata Teleservices 9,444, Vodafone Idea 3,727 and Reliance Communications 275. In the mobile telephone or wireless category, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel added 16.5 lakh and 12.8 lakh new customers, respectively. BSNL, Vodafone Idea and MTNL remained at the bottom of the segment with loss of 14.8 lakh, 13.5 lakh and 2,960 mobile customers respectively. The number of broadband subscribers in the country increased to 83.91 crore in January. This number was 83.22 crore in December.
