The world celebrated Women’s Day, but oppression and inequality still persist

Demonstrations, rallies and colorful programs were organized in different parts of the world on Wednesday to mark International Women’s Day as people celebrated and advocated equality for half of the world’s population. Despite these celebrations, women continue to face crime and rights abuses in Afghanistan, Iran and many other parts of the world. This situation is indicative of the fact that there is still a long way to go in terms of equality for women.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Monday that women’s rights are being violated and oppressed and if the current situation continues, gender equality will not be achieved even in the next 300 years. Women’s Day was celebrated in different ways in the world. More than one million people are expected to participate in Women’s Day events in Madrid, Barcelona and several other cities in Spain. Big rallies are also being organized in many other cities of the world.

Organizers say that their programs will be peaceful and their aim is only to achieve the rights enshrined in the constitution. Tight security arrangements have been made this time regarding the women’s march in Pakistan. Last year some radical groups had threatened to stop the march. The United Nations says that since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 2021, the country has become the most repressive place for women and girls in the world.
