Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday said there would be no shortage of fertilizers in the upcoming Kharif sowing season as domestic production and residual stock would be sufficient to meet the local demand for soil nutrients. The minister said the country may not need to import urea from the spot market to meet the demand for kharif (summer-sown) crops, as urea being imported under long-term supply agreements will come.

However, he said, some import of DAP (D-ammonium phosphate) would be done to meet the local demand. “There will be no shortage of fertilizers in the coming Kharif season,” Mandaviya told reporters here. We will have the remaining stock by the beginning of next month and the estimated domestic production between April and September of the next financial year will be sufficient to meet the demand during the kharif season. Mandaviya informed that the demand and supply of fertilizers for the upcoming Kharif season has already been planned by the Ministry. The sowing of crops in Kharif season starts with the onset of monsoon. Paddy and cotton, pulses and soyabean are the major crops of this season. Giving details, Mandaviya said that the estimated requirement of urea for the Kharif season is 179 lakh tonnes, while the total availability will be 194.31 lakh tonnes, including opening stock of 55 lakh tonnes till April 1 and production of 139.31 lakh tonnes during the next six months. Similarly, the opening stock of DAP is 2.5 million tonnes and the production is estimated to be 2 million tonnes, taking the total availability for the Kharif season to 4.5 million tonnes. The requirement of DAP for Kharif is estimated to be 58.82 lakh tonnes, he said, adding that the gap would be filled through imports. For NPKS, the total requirement of fertilizers for Kharif crops is 63.72 lakh tonnes, while the total availability will be 77.15 lakh tonnes, including opening stock of 28 lakh tonnes and estimated production of 49.15 lakh tonnes.

Asked about imports, Mandaviya said, “We will not need to import urea and NPK fertilizers for the Kharif season. A small amount of DAP will need to be imported. In the financial year 2021-22, India imported 91.36 lakh tonnes of urea, 54.62 lakh tonnes of DAP, 24.60 lakh tonnes of MOP (Murate of Potash) and 11.70 lakh tonnes of NPK fertilizers.
