History of World Meteorological Day

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) was established on 23 March in the year 1950. It is an intergovernmental body. It has 193 member countries. According to the WMO website, the day reflects the ‘essential contribution of the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services’. The origin of the organization is from the International Meteorological Organization (IMO). The headquarter of WMO is in Geneva, Switzerland.

Why is WMO Day relevant?

Due to climate change, extreme weather, climate and water events are becoming more frequent and intense in many parts of the world. These are happening due to population growth, urbanization and environmental degradation. Predictions of what the weather will do are still not sufficient, but impact-based forecasts inform the public about what the weather will do, critical to saving lives and livelihoods. Yet one in three people are still not adequately covered by early warning systems.

Better coordination between national meteorological and hydrological services, disaster management authorities and development agencies is fundamental for better prevention, preparedness and response. Being prepared and able to act in the right place at the right time can save many lives and protect the livelihoods of communities everywhere.
