Twitter bans over 6.8 lakh accounts in India amidst major changes

New Delhi (Best Hindu News): In a tough move after Elon Musk’s acquisition, Twitter banned a record 682,420 accounts promoting child sexual abuse and non-consensual nudity in India between January 26 and February 25. The micro-blogging platform, which is undergoing a churn under Musk, also suspended 1,548 accounts for allegedly promoting terrorism in the country. Twitter in its monthly report on compliance with the new IT Rules, 2021 said that it received just 73 complaints from users in India through its grievance redressal mechanism.

In addition, Twitter acted on 27 complaints appealing account suspensions. The company said, after reviewing the specifics of the situation, we have withdrawn the suspension of 10 of these accounts. The rest of the reported accounts have been suspended. It said, we received 24 requests related to general questions about Twitter accounts during this reporting period. Under the new IT Rules 2021, large digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users will have to publish monthly compliance reports.

The report came as Twitter was set to remove all legacy verified blue check marks, and users would have to pay either Rs 900 per month or Rs 9,400 per year for the Blue Badge with verification, with some additional benefits like, Such as the ability to edit tweets and post long text/videos.
