UN officials support India’s initiative to build a memorial wall in honor of peacekeepers

The International Day of UN Peacekeepers was observed here on Thursday with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres laying a wreath at a peacekeeping memorial set up in honor of the women and men who lost their lives serving in conflict-ridden countries.
Top UN officials have praised India’s role and contribution in peacekeeping operations across the world and supported its initiative to build a memorial wall in honor of the world body’s peacekeepers who lost their lives. The International Day of UN Peacekeepers was observed here on Thursday with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres laying a wreath at a peacekeeping memorial set up in honor of the women and men who lost their lives serving in conflict-ridden countries.
Guterres also presided over the ‘Dag Hammarskjold Medal’ ceremony at the General Assembly Hall, in which 103 military, police and civilian peacekeepers, including three Indian peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving under the United Nations last year, were posthumously recognized for their service and duty. Awarded the prestigious Medal for Supreme Sacrifice. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj received the medal on behalf of the Secretary-General. He called on the member states of the United Nations to support the proposal for the Memorial Wall.
It is expected that this resolution can be passed in the General Assembly soon. Kamboj said that despite all the fears and uncertainties “we believe in UN peacekeeping and that UN peacekeeping has played an important role in reducing violence in this world and making it a more stable place.”
