US Defense Minister admitted to Austin hospital, hands over his powers to Deputy Defense Minister

Washington. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was hospitalized again on Sunday due to symptoms related to “bladder problems”. Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Defense Ministry, gave this information. Austin was diagnosed with prostate cancer in December. The Pentagon said in a statement that Austin was taken by his security team to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center around 2:20 p.m.

Austin initially planned to carry on with the “functions of his office,” but at about 5 p.m. Sunday, he handed over his authority to Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks. Pentagon press secretary Major General Pat Ryder said Austin remained hospitalized as of Sunday evening. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as the White House and Congress, were informed about Austin’s health.

Austin was due to depart for Brussels on Tuesday to hold a meeting of the Ukraine Contact Group. They planned the meeting to coordinate military support for Kiev after Russia’s invasion in 2022. Austin was then scheduled to attend a regular meeting of NATO defense ministers. It was not immediately clear whether Austin’s hospitalization would change those plans.

Austin was diagnosed with prostate cancer in December and underwent a procedure called prostatectomy to treat it on December 22. He developed complications later in the week, and on January 1, in extreme pain, he was taken by ambulance to Walter Reed, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. Austin remained at Walter Reed until January 15. He then continued working from home while recuperating and returned to the Pentagon on January 29.
