US Vice President Kamala Harris visited the family home of her maternal grandfather PV Gopalan in Zambia’s capital Lusaka, where he lived as an Indian Foreign Service officer in the 1960s. Kamala Harris visited her grandfather’s house during her visit to Zambia. Kamala Harris said that as many of you know and for my family, my visit to Zambia has special significance for me. As you know, I went to Zambia as a young girl when my grandfather worked here.

In Lusaka, P V Gopalan lived at 16 Independence Avenue in the 1960s. Soon after Zambia’s independence in 1966, he moved to Lusaka to serve as director of relief measures and refugees. He served as an advisor to the first President of Zambia, Kenneth Kaunda.

Kamala Harris said that I remember my time here. I was a child, so this is a child’s memory. But I do remember being here and the warmth and excitement it felt like. The US Vice President said that therefore, on behalf of my family and all of us, congratulations and hello to all of us here.
