Students at Heyer Elementary School in Waukesha prepared to perform the song ‘Rainbowland’ for their spring concert, but school officials last week refused to approve it.

Wisconsin elementary school administrators barred first-graders from performing Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton’s “Rainbowland,” saying the song promotes gay acceptance and could “spark controversy.” Students at Heyer Elementary School in Waukesha were set to perform the song “Rainbowland” for their spring concert, but school officials last week refused to approve it.

Parents living in the district say the decision was taken because the song promotes acceptance of the gay community and contains a reference to a rainbow. Gay communities often use the rainbow (color) prominently in their displays. Superintendent James Seibert told Fox6 that the song “Rainbowland” was not allowed to be performed by administrators, citing that it was not age appropriate for the children.

He also cited the school board’s policy against raising controversial issues in classes. Sebert previously banned rainbow and gay flags from being displayed in classrooms in Waukesha and put a halt to the school district’s equity and other actions through 2021.
