Lucknow. Veteran tennis star Rohan Bopanna bid farewell to Davis Cup with victory. In the World Group-2 doubles match, he along with Yuki Bhambri defeated the Moroccan pair of Elliot Benchetrit-Younes Lalami Laroussi 6-2, 6-1.
However, the 43-year-old player is happy that he will now get time to spend with his family. But, he also said that being out of Davis Cup is not the end of his career.
Bopanna said after the match, “Sad to leave the Davis Cup, but also proud to have played for so long. I thank the entire country and all my teammates for the support. It has been a great journey.”
He further added, “Getting a chance to spend some time at home. Tennis is a very busy schedule, coming from New York and then going back to China. So, there will be a lot of travelling. I’m very excited to have a week of preparations. Then we have to go to Hangzhou for the Asian Games.”
Bopanna and Yuki Bhambri defeated Elliot Benchetrit-Younes Lalami Laroussi 6-2, 6-1 in the doubles match played at Vijayant Khand Mini Stadium in Gomti Nagar on Sunday.
Whereas, Sumit Nagal also won his singles match as India defeated Morocco 4-1 on Sunday to book a place in the World Group One playoffs.
India’s non-playing captain Rohit Rajpal, who is also a member of the Indian Olympic Association executive committee, said Bopanna would be missed.
With the win against Morocco, India will now play in the World Group 2 playoffs in 2024.
